From an Ayurvedic perspective, food can become a substitute for love or social appreciation. Eating in order to overcome and compensate feelings of sadness, reject, loneliness, grief etc. can be a cause of overeating. In addition, also hormonal changes, in women before menstruation (PMS), can lead to cravings for sweet and fatty foods. However, this only occurs at a specific point of time and is not considered as a lasting problem with long term negative effects.
