Ayurveda

Buddhist Candles

In Sanskrit, "Ayur” means life and “Veda” means knowledge. Ayurveda is a 5000-year-old time tested health care science from India. It is a complete and holistic health approach. Hence, it helps not only curing the illness with remedies, but also gives advice on how to prevent them through lifestyle changes. The principles can be adapted with changes of time.

Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. It originates from the ancient Vedic culture (the knowledge system). This knowledge was passed on from Gurus (teachers) to Shishya (students) through person to person discussions. Ayurvedic ideologies and principles are regarded as the origin for many other health sciences which are practiced all around the world.

Holistic approach of Ayurveda

Ayurveda suggests a complete plan of healthy living. By Ayurvedic definition, health is a balanced state of give and take between the inner world and outer world of the body. Studies show that most of the illnesses are resultant of the improper interaction between microcosm and macrocosm. Modern world is so distractive that we lose our inner bio-intelligence. With its timeless wisdom, Ayurveda gives us an understanding the Pathya (wholesome), Apathya (unwholesome) for mind, body and soul and thus, provides solutions for all health problems.

Concept of the individual body constitution (Prakruthi)

According to Ayurveda, every living being has its own harmony or balanced state which is unique. This unique combination of qualities constitutes the structural and functional characteristic of an individual. It has physical and mental attributes. Keeping this balance intact is the aim of Ayurvedic advice.

Ayurveda is a system based on the understanding of the 5 elements- Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Aether. In the human body, they combine in different proportions 3 life forces or energies, called DOSHAS. They are Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Vata - Energy for movement

Vata.jpg

Vata is composed of Vayu Mahabhootha (Air element) and Akasha (space element). It helps in animating the body and mind. The movements of hands and legs, movements connected to functions of breathing, eating, circulation of the blood act, eyes movements, even movements in tissue and cellular levels. Mentally, it represents the agility of thoughts and thus creativity. When out of control, it can create instability of mind because of the wavy ups and downs of thoughts.

Pitta - Energy of digestion and metabolism

Pitta.jpg

Pitta dosha is composed of Mahabhutas (elements) of Agni (fire) and Jala (water). Its functions are evident in physiology of digestion, assimilation, metabolism and body temperature. Mentally, it is attributed to logical analytical skills and intelligence. If not in balance, pitta causes aggression, anger, excess passion, hatred and jealousy

Kapha - Energy of nourishment and lubrication

Kapha.jpeg

Kapha dosha is composed of Jala (water) and Pruthwi (earth) mahabhutas (elements). It forms the solid structural parts of the body like bones, muscles, tendons and it holds structures like joints, tissues together. In addition, it provides nourishment and lubrication. Its pure essence is called Ojas (the body's ability to resist illness). On the mental level, Kapha is expressed as attachment, love, calmness and forgiveness. Mental stability is also a quality imparted by Kapha. If it disbalances, it leads to attachment, greed and envy.

Maintaining a balanced State of health

Right food and right regimen are the keys that Ayurveda recommends for good health. Nevertheless, the activity of mind is also an important factor to maintain a healthy state of being. Ayurveda says there are 3 pillars of life: Ahara (food), Nidra (sleep) and Bhrahma charya (divine rituals)/Abrahmacharya (proper use of sexual energy). Excess, too little or improper way of indulgence in the above said can cause imbalances.

What diet one should follow depends on an individual’s body constitution (Prakruthi). The diet can keep the qualities inside the body or the Doshas in a balanced state. The diet also can depend on the season.

The structure of the daily regimen

Different parts of the day are predominant with different Dosha actions. First parts of day and night are Kapha predominant (6am-10am, 6pm-10pm).  After this, Pitta is predominant (10am-2pm, 10pm-2am) and then Vata (2am-6am, 2pm-6pm). This can give an outlook on how to structure the day.

Reversing the Imbalances - Concept of Chikitsa (Treatment)

Ayurvedic practitioners advise specific diet and lifestyle changes to correct imbalances. Herbal support and Detox methods may also be recommended.
